What are the possibilities of using ANPR solution?

There are many more possibilities how to use digiVIS system. Beside abovementioned cases it could also be used for other matters such as for the companies. In a few cases below some of possible scenarios where to use digiVIS system are presented:

  • In a few control spots (e.g. in a border crosspoint) the VIS system is installed. Supervision and managing of the system are centralized. The system makes the border control possible by checking and analysing the files as well as by automatic reaction with alarm or flare to some trespasses. Thus it warns a policeman or a customs officer at the crosspoint. It supplies information about stolen or suspicious vehicles, which were recorded before into the database by the operator. In case of lorry transit of goods linkage to the bill of entry is possible, which largely reduces the possibility of falsification.

  • Road entrance to the international airport is supervised by VIS system. There are two checkpoints ; one is at the entry to the airport area and one at the exit. Thus security service can check which vehicles are or were found at the airport area at any time. This provides high security, also because in the database the pictures can be checked.

  • A concrete works suspects that contractor provides less material (such as sand and cement) that is evident from the forms of delivery. As well as there is a doubt about measure precision of ordered concrete. The company decided to obtain a weighting machine connected to VIS system. They are both placed at the entry/exit checkpoint so every lorry is weighted twice. The reading of each lorry is automatically checked in the form of delivery. In this way fraud and abuse can be thwarted.

  • A reputable hotel in a tourist spot has a problem because some visitors who are not the guests of the hotel are also parking in a parking place that is ment to be only for the guests. There is a sign forbidding such a manner, however, it does not help to avoid similar situations. The hotel board decided to put the VIS system to supervise the entry/exit. When the car is driven to the gate of the parking place, the VIS system identifies the number plate and lifts the gate. When a guest is checked in at the reception, a receptionist records the number of the licence plate and the time of accomodation into the database. Thus the guest can pass the gate without any problem. If any other visitor wants to park, there is a possibility for him to do that (could be set in the system), but when he decides to leave, he has to go to the reception and pay for the day. A receptionist records him into the database for a single going out, otherwise the gate does not lift.

What is the accuracy of your ANPR software?

Our ANPR software has very high acceptance rate, which practically means, that over 95% of all vehicles is recognized correctly. The remaining vehicles are only partially recognized, which is caused by damaged or dirty licence plate, not by some software error. Competitors in ANPR usually reports even higher rates, but they do not tell, that this is measured using optimal conditions - new, clean licence plates. In such conditions we can achieve teoretically 100% - but in reality we all know, that not all vehicles will have new and clean licence plates.

We can maximize acceptance rate by taking more than 1 picture per vehicle or even using 2 cameras per lane: one for front and one for rear licence plate. Using such system (front + rear camera) we practicly get 99%+ acceptance rate of all vehicles.


What is the main difference between ANPR and ordinary camera? Can we use ordinary camera and your ANPR software?

The cameras we are using work in s.c. "near-IR" spectrum only (visible light is filtered out) with infrared LED illuminator. That means, that picture is black&white with very high contrast (which is optimal for ANPR) and that most of distractions are "filtered out" already at the beginning, so ANPR recognition process is much faster (because ANPR engine does not need to deal with lots of details in the picture). This is especially important in non-optimal light conditions (for example rain & night - strong car's headlamps, light reflections in a wet road ...), where ordinary camera wouldn't be able to ensure a readable picture of a licence plate.

Therefore we do not suggest using ordinary camera for ANPR, because ANPR results will be worse then expected (we do not have optimal conditions all the time, do we? ). So, simply said - it is not impossible to use ordinary camera, but the results will be (much) worse than when using special ANPR camera.

The licence plate size on the picture should be between 1/3 and 1/4 of picture width (around 250 pixels) for optimal recognition!



Whati are benefits of using a megapixel ANPR camera in comparision to ordinary (PAL/NTSC) camera?

In our company we developed our own high resolution camera, based on 3,1 megapixel IR camera. Offcourse the main benefit is much higher picture resolution, which means, that wider field-of-view can be used. So the licence plate (vehicle) can be detected in much larger area, what was not possible (with enough resolution) with standard PAL camera. The resolution is as big, that even more traffic lanes can be covered using single camera only!

The other advantage is simplifying the system installation. Our megapixel camera only requires LAN cable (PoE), where ordinary camera required power and video cable directly to the grabber inside the computer, where ANPR software is running. Megapixel camera can be connected anywhere in the network (so the ANPR server can access it over network) and server doesn't need framegrabber, because all signals are already digitalized by the camera!


We would like to test the system before we decide to purchase it. Is it possible?

Yes, offcourse! Our main goal is to satisfy the costumer needs and this is exactly what we would suggest you anyway, if you decide to purchase a system.

If you already have hardware (camera, illuminator ...) and would only like to check, if picture quality satisfieds our needs, please send us some (10-100) pictures in differend light conditions (day, night, rain ...) and we can check them using our software and let you know, if your video system is already "ANPR ready".
